World Music Day is also known as the Fête de la Musique or Make Music Day. So, you have a nice occasion to enjoy an unusual music celebration. On Make Music Day, you can play music outside in your neighborhoods, in public spaces and parks. You enjoy free concerts, where musicians play for fun.

The French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, and Maurice Fleuret, were the first to organize the first all-day musical celebration in Paris in 1982. Later, people began celebrating this striking day in 120 countries around the globe.

They started this musical practice as “the music everywhere and the concert nowhere.” Interestingly, a 1982 study on the cultural habits of the French revealed that 5 million people (one child out of two) played a musical instrument.

The celebration soon brought people out on the streets. People first started celebrating the day as the Fête de la Musique on the streets in Paris in 1982. Since then, the festival has turned into an international phenomenon.

Over 700 cities in 120 countries celebrate Make Music Day. These are Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Ecuador, India, Italy, Germany, Greece, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. On this nice day, you can see so many people bring the music onto the streets. Of course, venues are also encouraged to get in on the play.

By the way, France is the country where too many events take place on Make Music Day. In fact, the Fête de la Musique is one of the only nights of the year where French law allows to no noise restriction. This means, the musicians can play all night and have no fears that neighbors will call the police.
