So many components of our daily life require the use of the internet or technology. But in some countries, those 2 things could be very limited. Some countries suffer from slow internet, while others suffer from limitations. Take Yemen and Libya for instance. Those 2 countries have the slowest internet speed in the world. Other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, have no access to VoIP services or in other words, “calling apps”.

What is VOIP?

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and is also called IP Telephony or Internet Telephony, Internet Calling, Voice Over Broadband (VoBB), and broadband phone. In more common terms, VoIP can be defined as a phone service over the Internet. It was developed around 1995 and started with a company called VocalTec. VoIP has changed the way people connect. The growth of VoIP is similar to that of the Internet in the early 90’s.

How does VOIP work?

VoIP is a method for taking analog audio signals (like those you hear when talking on the phone) and turning them into digital data that can be passed over the Internet. An audio signal can be characterized as a representation of sound, typically as an electrical voltage. Audio signals have frequencies in the audio frequency range of about 20 – 20.000 Hz (the limits of human hearing).

VoIP is an alternative way of making phone calls that can be extremely affordable or 100% free. It eliminates the need to always use landlines allowing you to communicate without a telephone set. VoIP is considered the most successful technology of the past decade.

VoIP has made a real revolution in the field of technology and has the potential to completely change how the world’s phone system works. VoIP providers are experiencing steady growth and creating plans for the future. So far, VoIP has proved to be a good means to replace the POTS (Plain Old Telephone System).

Blocking of VoIP Services

"overcome

The question why certain countries block VoIP services calls for a complicated answer. In fact, the reasons vary from local social customs, political climate, and national business laws. So, what are the most common reasons?

Some countries block VoIP services because of the competition in the field, as was the case in Egypt. The telecom companies operating in the country reported to have lost revenue, and the government agreed, banning user access. In countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the telecom companies block these services for the purpose of monopolizing the industry.

In countries where the government restricts Internet access, it’s common to have VoIP blocked. The purpose is to restrict and force residents to practice local communication means. This was the case in Brazil, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, etc. These countries apply Internet restriction policies. On the other hand, there are countries where VoIP blocks aren’t made by these countries. Instead, they’re made by the Internet Service Provider or ISP.
