Today is World Photography Day. On this very special day, photography lovers from all around the world commemorate by snapping pictures to share their love for photography with the world. Let’s have a look back at the history of photography and how it started evolving by time.

History of Photography

Today marks 180 years of Photography. Photography first originated in France in 1939 by Louis Daguerre. Louis Daguerre, one of the first founders of photography, invented what was then called the daguerreotype, a photographic process that used to be the practicable method of obtaining permanent images with a camera. On August 19, 1839, the French government announced the invention of photography as a gift free to the world. However, before the daguerreotype, the first photographic process — heliography — was invented around 1824 by Nicéphore Niépce. Images were obtained with bitumen of Judea spread on a silver plate after an exposure time of several days. Soon came the Kodak founder, Georges Eastman, and then came the Lumiere brothers, Auguste and Louis Lumiere the first filmmakers and cinematographers in history.

This is the world’s first photograph or at least, the oldest surviving photo that was taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826 or 1827.

Back then, photographers used techniques that involve manipulation to edit the photos, such as retouching with ink, paint, airbrushing, or scratching Polaroids during developing. Today, all this is being done simply by editing apps.
